Most of the districts where I work have outside people come in for lunch duty, so teachers aren't stuck monitoring the cafeteria.

I don't mind recess duty either, but there are times when a person just has to deal with biological needs! Fortunately most of the places I work share recess duty for that very reason. One teacher will have the first ten minutes and another teacher the second ten.

That's exactly what I mean. I understand that they don't always have time to write out everything that could possibly help, and there's no way they could anticipate everything anyway.

But some things, like a different schedule or really anything having to do with rain, happen often enough that I think it isn't asking too much for the teacher to just have instructions for that sort of thing in the sub folder from the start.

I love it when someone else takes control and all I have to do is help out. It makes for an easy day if the other person has a clue about what they're doing.

I'm right there with you on the teacher shorthand and the recess/schedule thing. I don't know how many times the teacher's plan has told me to "have them take out their literature anthologies" and I face a room full of blank faces until I hold up the TE of the book. "OH! You mean the RED book!" Or they leave you acronoyms that you have no clue about.

I also had a situation where it unexpectedly rained one day. The teacher had left me the plan to follow during a regular day, and nowhere in the room did she have a bell schedule posted for a rainy day. Just as I was getting ready to have the kids clean up for lunch, I got a phone call asking why they weren't in the lunchroom. Then I found out since it was rainy-day schedule, I'd only get 30 minutes for my own lunch, starting about 15 mintues prior to the time I found out about it.

So, yeah....I hear you!

Just something I noticed and want to point out to you: the text on this response for overruns the scrap of paper image. Hopefully this is clear to you and will help if this is indeed an error.

If I had your English classes (or any like them) I'd cry if you had anyone else.

I know I'm stereoytping with my description. But for me, that's usually the way it works out.

Pffft! CLEARLY you're not a sub in MY school! MY English classes are FUN! (well, *I* think they are, anyway..). The last time I had a sub, I had him play Grammar Jeopardy with the kids. Everyone reported back that they had a blast...

True, true. I always prepare for a full day when I have an AM half day. Good advice.

That's awesome the whole extra pay thing for fifteen minutes!

Totally understand. Your days sound like mine. I pretty much have to stalk the website in order to find jobs, so I'm constantly checking or waiting.

Snow days are the same--how great! A day off! But not really because as subs, we don't get paid if school isn't in session.

Flexibility is great. But it comes with it's own set of consequences, too.

I'm looking forward to this feature. I love and respect subs, and I want to do everything that I can to make sure they can do their job easily and well (and that includes threatening my kids with unspeakable consequences if they so much as THINK of trying to be rude or disrespectful, or of trying to pull one over on a sub).

Most of the time, we sub each other's classes (we're a teeny-tiny school, so we can do that), so we don't often have outside staff coming in, but on the rare occasion that we do, i want to be ready...
